is given, at least one year of German and one of French and she should make every effort to do all the supplementary reading that is possible.

In planning a high school course, with library work in view, the general course should be followed as outlined in the course of study for the high schools of Chicago, published by the Board of Education. In the second year it is advisable to substitute ancient history for geometry. In the third and fourth years the language and history courses should be preferred to the courses in science. History and Civics should be substituted for one foreign language. Courses in languages should be equally divided between French and German.

The Chicago Public Library prefers to accept young women between the ages of twenty and thirty-five. Those wishing to enter the Training Class must pass an entrance examination in

history, literature and general information. To prepare for the entrance examination, a candidate should keep herself informed on current events, and should review a good book on general history, and a general history of literature. Further suggestions regarding

reading will be given by the director of the Training Class at the Public Library.

The entrance examination for the fall of 1915 will be given September 2. Applications should be filed not later than August 20.

Not all who successfully pass the examination are admitted to the Training Class. Personality, bearing, appearance, manners, advanced education, experience in teaching and other occupations are considered.

During the period of eight months in the Training Class, the student receives no salary, neither is she under any expense, except for lunches and car fare. At the end of this time she must pass a civil service examination on such studies as are followed in the class. This examination must be taken before one can obtain a position in the library.

If a young woman can afford to do so, it is to her advantage to go to a regular library school where the methods used in many libraries are taught, instead of those used in one library only, as is essential in a training class.

Courses in library schools cover from one to two years. The tuition varies from seventy-five dollars to one hundred dollars a year.
