I wish I could give you any Hope of soon receiving your Debt of J. Read... It gives me great pleasure to hear so good an Acct. of our Son Billy. In return let me tell you, that our Daughter Sally is indeed a very good Girl, affectionate, dutiful and industrious, has one of the best Hearts, and tho' not a Wit, is for one of her years, by no means deficient of Understanding... Our Assembly talk of sending me to England speedily. Then look out sharp, and if a fat old Fellow should come to your Printing House and and request a little Smouting, depend upon it, 'tis,

Signed, 2 pp. 4to, Virginia, May 9, 1763. To Mr. Strahan. * An interesting letter written just after the conclusion of the Peace between Great Britain and France and the cession of Canada to the former, He congratalates Mr. Strahan and his country on the "wise counsels that have made it," and states that the treaty is universally applauded in America. In a postscript he mentions his "Cato Major.'

* I wondered to find that you had not in Holland on the 28th. received the Declaration of War surely there never was a more unjust war. . . . The spirit of Rapine dictated it every man in England who fits out a privateer to take advantage of it. would rob on the Highway in his own country if he was not restrained by the Gallows. They have qualified poor Capt. Jones, with the Title of Pirate, who was only at war with England. If God governs, as I firmly believe, it is impossible such Wickedness should prosper." He also mentions Silas Deane, Henry Laurens, John Adams, etc.

* An interesting letter of introduction of Christopher Saur, the Philadelphia printer. He writes highly of his loyalty, and states that he was a good deal confided in at Head-Quarters, and often employed in carrying on a correspondence with the Loyalists in the Rebel Country.'
