THE FIRST ENGLISH KING STYLED

DEFENDER OF THE FAITH.

Born at Greenwich, A. D. 1491. Began to reign, April 2d, 1509. Married only six times; viz.-to Catherine of Arragon, from whom he was divorced; she died in retirement, at Kimbolton. Mary I. was daughter of this Queen. Anne Boleyn, (Mother of Queen Elizabeth) beheaded. Jane Seymour, died in child-bed of Edward VI. Anne Cleves, divorced, and died in retirement. Catherine Howard, beheaded. Catherine Parr, Widow of Lord Latimor, escaped the enmity of Gardiner, Bishop of Winchester, and others, and survived Henry, who reigned Thirty-eight Years. Died 1547, and was buried at Windsor.

PRINCIPAL EVENTS.

Rise and fall of Wolsey. Cruelties of the King, particu. larly to his Wives. The authority of the Pope renounced. The King beheads Thomas Cromwell, a faithful minister ; the Earl of Surrey, the most accomplished Nobleman of his Court; and Sir Thomas More, the most virtuous of his subjects. Splendid meeting with Francis I. of France. Monasteries suppressed. The Bible first translated into English, and placed in Churches. Cannon first cast in England; and the first Hops imported.
