THIS eighty-fifth yearly issue of THE ENGLISH Catalogue of Books comprises the titles (under authors, and subjects or titles) of works published during 1921, and also of some received too late for inclusion in the eighty-fourth issue.

The main entry for each book begins with the author's surname (if known) in heavy type. As an index to these "Author" records, entries are also made under the titles, commencing with their most important words (which usually indicate the subjects with which the books deal), or with the first words. Many other index entries are also made under subjects in order to make the CATALOGUE of use to persons in search of the literature of a particular topic, as well as to those requiring a particular book. The name or word under which the main entry appears is printed in italics in these index entries, thus giving a reference to the place where the full information about a book may be found. Main entries and index entries are in one alphabet.

Writers with compound names are entered under the first part of the name, e.g. :

Ashley-Cooper (F. S.)

and accordingly must be looked for in that order. References are also made, however, from the last part of the name.

The publications of learned Societies are recorded in an Appendix.

The names and addresses of the Publishers of Great Britain and Ireland, followed by those of the principal publishers in the United States and Canada, will be found at the end of the volume. The telegraphic and cable addresses and telephone numbers have been added when known.

Following the Preface is an analysis of the books of the year 1921, showing in detail the number of works in each class of literature, and giving the proportions of new books, translations, pamphlets, and new editions.

Every effort has been made to obtain the full particulars of the books noted. Special enquiries were made in every case where information was deficient; and most publishers courteously responded. In the cases where entries have been included without prices, the fault lies with the publishers concerned.

Hearty thanks are due to the many publishers, secretaries, librarians, authors and bibliographers who have assisted in making this book more correct and comprehensive than it would have been otherwise.

The Editor will be glad to have particulars (author, title, size, price, publisher, and month of publication) of any work which may have been omitted. Information regarding each book should be given on a separate slip of paper or postcard. It should be addressed to The Editor of THE ENGLISH CATALOGUE OF BOOKS. PUBLISHED DURING 1921 IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

PUBLISHERS' CIRCULAR records a total of 11,026 books as having been published in the United Kingdom during the year 1921. This is an increase of 22 compared with the total for

1920.

Although the totals for 1921 and 1920 are thus practically identical, an examination of the table showing the numbers of books published each month reveals the fact that the monthly distribution is different. The Spring and Autumn publishing seasons were not so marked in 1921 as formerly. Except for a drop during the holiday season, and a slight rise in the Autumn, the figures show a fairly constant level maintained throughout the year. This is interesting in view of the efforts that have been made to keep book-buying active in every month of the year, by means of such ideas as the "Buy a book a week" campaign. Juvenile books are the most decidedly seasonal books, the number published varying from 13 in February to 189 in October. Of the 757 juvenile books published during the year, 352 issued in September and October. The idea is to catch the Christmas trade, of course, but there are many large buyers of children's books who find themselves starved during some months and surfeited during others; and we cannot help thinking that a more even flow of such books from the Press would have better results. It is not only the Christmas uncle who buys books for boys and girls.

The Classified Analysis," appended, shows how closely the two years resemble one another in their main features. books were 19 more than in 1920, the totals being 8,757 and 8,738; and new editions only varied by 3, the totals being 2,269 and 2,266.

The various classes of literature show no striking variations. The following classes increased during the year:Religion (+96), Description and Travel (+102), Fine Arts (+83), Poetry and Drama (+54), Business (+44), Military and Naval (+38), Literature (+37), and Biography (+23). Decreases are to be

noted in Fiction (-178), Law (—89), Philology (-57), Sociology, and History (-47 each), and Geography (—32). Minor increases and decreases are shown by the Table. Religion has recovered from its relapse of 1920; and the misguided few who regard Fiction as an evil will gain a spark of comfort from the fact that that class has suffered the greatest decrease. The increase in Poetry appears to consist of minor songsters, because it is made up chiefly by pamphlets.

It is interesting to compare the order in which the totals of the chief classes of literature appear this year and in the last pre-war year, because these totals furnish a rough indication of the preferences of the reading public :
