ARITHMETIC: Theoretical and Practical.

Being a NEW ARITHMETIC BY J. S. MACKAY, LL.D., Author of "Mackay's Euclid." MESSRS. CHAMBERS have pleasure in announcing the Publication of this Important Work, upon which Dr. MACKAY has been engaged for some years. The Publishers are sure that all Teachers who know "Mackay's Euclid will welcome the appearance of this volume. EXTRACTS FROM PRESS NOTICES AND TEACHERS' OPINIONS REGARDING WORK.

THE

"I have carefully gone through 'Dr. Mackay's Arithmetic,' and like it well, the expository part of it being exceptionally well done.'

"It is far and away the best arithmetic I have

seen.

"It is the first book in which I have seen an attempt made to introduce the boys from the first to the rational methods of computation. I shall certainly put the book in use in my school at the first opportunity for a change."

"A student using it cannot fail to get a more thorough insight into the theory of arithmetic than would be the case by using any other book with which I am acquainted.'

CHAMBERS'S

"Includes all the rules used in our best school text-books; everything good, and calculated to make the pupil think. It stands every test in the matter of examples."

"All schoolboys (to say nothing of schoolmasters) should be grateful for the intellectual interest you give to a subject which in itself seems merely practical and matter-of-fact."

"I must congratulate you on the 'character' of the examples."

Having carefully examined 'Mackay's Arithmetic,' I may say that I consider it an excellent text-book. clearly and skilfully given, and the sections on The explanations are proportion and irrational numbers are exceptionally good."

ALGEBRA FOR

SCHOOLS.

BY WILLIAM THOMSON, M.A., B.Sc. Price 4s 6d.

Among the very best elementary text-books, the work will take a prominent place."--Journal of Education.

In writing the present text-book, the aim has been to produce a work suitable for schools, in which the principles of the science should be clearly and accurately set forth, so that the student may not merely become expert in the use of symbols, but may be enabled to understand the rationale of every step in his work.

Each chapter is divided into sections, and to most of these is appended a number of fully worked-out examples. These have been selected so as to illustrate the best methods of dealing with the different classes of problems that usually arise in elementary algebra, and great care has been taken to arrange the successive steps of each solution as clearly, concisely, and logically as possible.

The exercises are numerous, more especially in the earlier chapters. They are intended to provide a sufficient variety both for a first and a second reading, and are carefully graduated and subdivided. In the case of some of the more difficult examples, such hints regarding the mode of solution are given as are likely to be helpful to beginners.

The short section on Graphs will, it is hoped, be found both interesting and useful.

The following references to "Mackay's Euclid" are made in "Chapters on the Aims and Practice of Teaching," by W. P. WASKMAN, M.A., B.Sc., Headmaster of Kingswood School, Bath. This is in many respects the best school edition in existence." (Page 197.)

"A good deal of judicious cross-questioning will be required before the definitions are mastered. Mackay has five pages of masterly questions full of suggestiveness." (Page 199.)

The proposition is not known as it ought to be, unless its principles can be applied to the solution of little problems upon it, and it is my firm belief, the result of experience, that the dullest may be taught to solve these. Herein lies, from the teacher's point of view, the supreme merit of Mackay's book; for to every proposition this editor adds a number of easy riders or problems. These are often such as the teacher may readily make for himself, and the teacher ought indeed to keep a collection of such home-made problems." (Page 202.)
