HYMN

CXXXVI.

For one under Temptation.

I.

JESU, lover of my Soul,

Let me to thy Bofom fly,
While the nearer Waters roll,
While the Tempeft ftill is high;
Hide me, O my SAVIOUR, hide,
Till the ftorm of Life is past :
Safe into the Haven guide,
O receive my Soul at laft!

II.

Other Refuge have I none,

Hangs my Helpless Soul on Thee,
Leave, ah! leave me not alone,
Still support and comfort me :
All my Truft on Thee is stay'd,
All mine Help from thee I bring,
Cover my defenceless Head

With the Shadow of thy * Wing.
III.

Thou, O CHRIST, art all I want,
More than All in Thee I find:
Raife the Fallen, chear the Faint,
Heal the Sick, and lead the Blindi

Juft and holy is thy Name,

I am all Unrighteousness!

Vile § and full of Sin I am,

Thou art full of Truth and Grace. I

IV.

Plenteous Grace with Thee is found,
Grace to pardon all my Sin:
Let the healing Streams abound,
Make, and keep me pure within:
Thou of Life the Fountain art,
Freely let me take of Thee,
Spring Thou up within mine Heart,
Rife to all Eternity !+

To Thee, againft Myfelf, to Thee
A Worm of Earth I cry :

An half awaken'd Child of Man,

An Heir of endless Blifs or Pain,
A Sinner born to die.

Lo! on a narrow Neck of Land,
'Twixt two unbounded Seas I ftand,
Secure-infenfible!

A Point of Time, a Moment's Space,
Removes me to that heav'nly Place,
Or fhuts me up in Hell!

Eternal Things imprefs!

* I am glad of an Opportunity to rescue this fignificant Word out of the Hands of the Infidels, who use it together with Luck, Fortune, Chance, Deftiny, to promote their favourite Scheme, of excluding the particular Providence of the Wife Difpofer of all Events from the Government of

the Affairs of Men.

But the Word Fate (Fatum) fignifies-What is SPOKEN, from the Latin Word FARI to speak. FATE then eminently relates to what hath been jpoken by the most HIGH GOD : So Minutius Felix, that able Lawyer and great Scholar in St. Cyprian's Time, fays, Nihil aliud eft FATUM quam quod de unoquoque Noftrum Deus Farus eft. FATE is nothing elje than what GOD bath SPOKEN, Concerning every one of us. Even the Heathens had this Idea of it; for fays Statius, FATUM eft quod Dii FANTUR. FATE in that which the Gods speak. In this truly Chriftian and excellent Hymn, the word Fate may be fuppofed to relate to that aweful Word which GOD pake, when He declared to fallen Man, Duft thou art, and unto Duft fhalt thou return. Gen. iii. 19. latter Part. In this View, the Word Fate may properly fignify Death, and Difeafes may be faid to appear more or lefs Fatal, as they feem more or lefs likely to fulfil GOD's Word, by bringing us to the Duft.

And tell me, LORD, fhall I be there
To meet a joyful Doom!

Be this my one great Bus'nefs Here,
With ferious Industry and Fear,
My future Blifs t' infure!
Thine utmost Counsel to fulfi!,
And fuffer all thy righteous Will,
And to the End endure !
VI.

Then, SAVIOUR, then my Soul receive,
Transported from the Vale to live
And reign with Thee above,
Where Faith is fweetly loft in Sight,
And Hope in full fupreme Delight,
And everlasting Love.
