MACMILLAN & CO., LONDON.

attended by parents and others. Miss Turner, the kindergarten mistress, gave an object lesson on Bees, and at the end of the programme the children took part in the game of haymaking. Recitation of English poetry by the Lower School forms also took place at the end of the term, and consisted of selections from Macaulay's "Lays of Ancient Rome," Aytoun's "Scottish Ballads," and Scott's "Lay of the Last Minstrel." The terminal music recital was held in July, and was much appreciated. The afternoon meeting of the Old Girls' Association took place on July 6th. The rules, which had been revised by the committee, had been reprinted, and were circulated amongst the members. Grants were made from the balance in hand towards the expenses for a picnic in the autumn, for an Old Girls' Prize to the school, and for tea requisites, to become the property of the Association. The ten tennis match players of this year have made gifts to the club for use at future matches. Two beautiful grass tennis courts have been placed at the disposal of the club on Saturdays, through the kindness of Mr. Thomas Hill.

PORTSMOUTH HIGH SCHOOL.-Our annual concert, held on July 26th, in the Assembly Hall, was a decided success; the room looked very pretty, and both it and the corridors and gallery were filled with visitors. As usual, the Kindergarten part of the entertainment elicited the greatest applause: this consisted of drill, recitations, and an action song, all of which were admirably performed. The First Form children, too, were much applauded acting the "Children's Market"; the juvenile saleswomen carried baskets of fruit and flowers, all tastefully adorned with gay ribbons. The more advanced recitations included selections from Schiller, Boursault, and Milton. A violin duet and pianoforte selections from Beethoven, Heller, Chopin, &c., completed the programme. There was an exhibition of kindergarten work, and many visitors were pleased to examine the little ones' productions. The Mayoress, at the last prize-giving, having promised our Tennis Club two guineas for prizes, these were competed for at a tournament held on June 27th. The Senior champion proved to be M. Gladys Bullen, and the Junior, Kate Marshall. The Mayoress was kind enough to be present on the occasion to bestow on the successful competitors their well-earned rewards. A very enjoyable day was spent by some of the club at the Sutton High School, the members of whose club had sent us a challenge. Sutton" was successful, but the Portsmouth girls returned delighted, notwithstanding their defeat, with their day's outing, which had been made so pleasant by the kindness of Miss Duirs and their other entertainers. PRESTON GRAMMAR SCHOOL.-In the Oxford Local Examination, H. C. Beaven obtained the first place (Junior) both in Mathematics and

Religious Knowledge, as well as the fourth place in Arithmetic, fifth in the general list, and distinction in Latin, Greek, and English. H. P. Bee was fifty-fourth in the general list, and distinguished in Mathematics, Religious Knowledge, and English.

ROSSALL.-The leaving Exhibitions were won by H. N. Bolton, E. E. Yates, G. A. Hereford; Lord Egerton's Prize (Classics), H. N. Bolton; Ainslie Medal (Mathematics), J. D. Barker; French Prize, J. D. Barker; Science, H. Dickinson. Rev. W. Hall (O. R.) is leaving, having accepted a Chaplaincy at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. He will be succeeded by H. Aris (O.R.). On 30th July an excellent concert was given by the Meister Glee Singers. Prize Day was held on 31st July, the prizes being given by the Dean of Manchester. The school meets again on 27th September, an extra week's holiday having been given in honour of the Jubilee.

STRATFORD-ON-AVON.-KING EDWARD VI. SCHOOL.-The Charles Flower Scholarship of £50 per annum for four years, tenable at any University, or place of higher education, approved by the trustees, has been awarded, on the result of the annual examination, to Mr. A. J.Williams. Proxime accessit Mr. G. R. Talbot. The scholarship was founded by the will of the late Mr. C. E. Flower, of Stratford-on-Avon.

WARRINGTON.-ST. ELPHIN'S CLERGY DAUGHTERS' SCHOOL.-— The Jubilee Reunion of this school was held on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 9th and 10th. A great many visitors and old girls were present, and it proved a very enjoyable time for all. There was a special service in the School Chapel, when the Rev. F. Smithwick, the Vicar of Seaforth, preached. On both evenings entertainments were given by the present girls, consisting of a play, "The Queen of Hearts," and "Advertisement" tableaux. The annual concert and prize-giving of the school took place on Tuesday, July 24th. The prizes were given by the Very Rev. the Dean of Chester, who spoke in high terms of the musical performances of the girls, which included a cantata, "The Twin Sisters," and violin and pianoforte duets and solos. The Dean also referred to the good report of the school given by the Oxford School Examiner, and to the results of the Royal Drawing Society Examination, mentioning that out of forty candidates nineteen gained honour and twenty-seven pass certificates. Amongst the visitors present were Canon and Mrs. Penhryn, Canon Stowell, the Rev. F. W. Willis (Chaplain) and Mrs. Willis, Mrs. Jones, and many other friends and parents. After luncheon, when the health of the Very Rev. the Dean of Chester, the Headmistress, the Chaplain, the Staff, and success to the School had been proposed and enthusiastically received, most of the girls went home with their parents, a few only remaining till the following day. TRANSLATION AND EXTRA PRIZES.

"A. M.," the winner of the Extra Prize for July, is Miss Annie Matheson, 63 Queen's Road, Bayswater, W.

“G.E.D.,” the winner of the Translation Prize for July, is G. E. Dartnell, Esq., Abbottsfield House, Stratford Road, Salisbury.

A Prize of Two Guineas is offered for the best translation of the following extract from Theuriet:
