DOC EX

PREFACE

During the more than one hundred years the National Agricultural Library has been in existence, it has acquired a notable collection of historical, agricultural, scientific, and economic books published during the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries.

The Library is now engaged in a program of reorganizing this collection to make it more accessible to its users. This bibliography, the first of its kind issued by the Library, includes works in the general agriculture category. Those published in Europe bear imprints prior to 1800 and those published in the United States bear imprints prior to 1830. Also included are several unique historical titles of later dates.

Much of the material was originally cataloged for inclusion in the catalog of the Library of Congress. The call number used by the National Agricultural Library and the Library of Congress printed card number (when available) have been included in the citation.

This publication is one more step taken by the Library in making known its complete resources to the international scientific community. Plans are under way to publish additional lists in various classifications such as botany and mycology, entomology, and forestry.

In the meantime we shall welcome comments and suggestions to help us make these lists of the greatest value possible to historians, researchers, and librarians.
