PREFACE. The first edition of this catalogue was published in 1894. The removal of the Library to the Copley Square building and the subsequent remarkable development of the Fine Arts Department rapidly exhausted the entire edition; and the collection of books relating to Architecture has increased so much that a new edition becomes imperative. In 1909 work was begun upon this new edition, toward the cost of which the Boston Society of Architects and other friends of the Library have contributed five hundred dollars. Miss Mary H. Rollins who prepared the first issue is also chiefly responsible for the present edition. In the main, the arrangement of the Catalogue of 1894 is followed, the only specific enlargement of its scope being a section on City Planning, prepared by Mr. Frank A. Bourne. Most of the difficulties attending the preparation of such a catalogue are too evident to need comment; the majority of them have to be settled arbitrarily, and only a few points require explanation. Any one familiar with recent archæological investigations will realize the impossibility of drawing, in such a catalogue, a distinct line between archæology and architecture. In the present instance it has been deemed advisable to err, if at all, by expanding the first-named subject, although many brief archæological studies containing a few plates of mosaics, mural decoration, or architectural detail have been omitted. Biography has occasioned difficulties in selection in the case of such artists as Raphael, Michelangelo and Leonardo, whose work includes architecture and decoration. Although the great bulk of biographical material dealing with these men has been rejected, enough has been included to supply ample data on their work in this field. Many of the periodicals listed have been published in several series, each series being numbered from I up. This has been indicated in every case by a note, in order to remind the reader that when calling for a particular issue the number of the Series as well as the number of the Volume must be given. Inasmuch as the section on City Planning was added after the Catalogue was largely in type, a few subjects, for example municipal baths and markets, which would otherwise be found within this section, appear in the main body of the catalogue. The greatest source of embarrassment has been in connection with varying forms of the same proper name.. The Library is constantly receiving new information respecting such names, and embodying it in the public card catalogue; but after the titles in a catalogue preparing for the press have once been classified, it is difficult to provide means by which the name of an author already represented shall be kept uniform throughout the work, and at the same time made to correspond with the form in the card catalogue, based upon the latest information. In the index to this catalogue, however, references from one form of name to another have been made freely, and it is hoped that these may obviate any confusion. Collections of architectural views relating to a special country, city or period, have been grouped under the heading "Views" in their appropriate section. It should be said that many of the mounted photographs and other pictures in the Fine Arts Department of the Library illustrate architectural or decorative subjects, and some of these, as well as a limited collection of lantern slides covering similar subjects, are loaned by the Library under conditions, which may be ascertained from those in charge of the Department.
