People said they were mad when the Edwards family swapped London drizzle for Spain, still under Franco's iron fist. They drove down in their Rolls-Royce and announced they were building a hostel in Nerja, east of Málaga.

The builder promised a quick completion but delivered two years late. When the Fontainebleau finally opened its doors, the celebrations barely had time to cool before the Guardia Civil threatened to close them down, and the Edwards' Spanish dream teetered on the edge of disappearing overnight.
